From the year 1934 until today the Trot Grand National Prize has taken place without stopping in Majorca. Even in 1936, despite the huge stir caused by the Civil War, it was also held.
It was on the race commissioner’s initiative, Bartolomé Guasp, and with the full support of the Real Sociedad Hípica de Mallorca chaired by Antoni Moncada Cánovas de Mora, that this great classic was started.
The Grand National Prize is a race which has always been devoted (with a few exceptions in its beginnings) to choose the best three-year-old product (mares or stallions), born on Spanish territory and it is, without any doubt, the three minutes, approximately, that can congregate the greatest number of people in a racecourse.
Nowadays it takes place in Son Pardo, but since the first Grand Prize held in the Buenos Aires racecourse, this celebration has been held in different locations.
The fact that in order to participate, the horses must have been born in Spain, has been a great incentive for all, enthusiasts, owners, riders, trainers, but especially for the island’s breeders.
Clear evidence of this is the 37-second and 1-tenth per kilometre lowering between the registered mark in the first edition by Trini II and the current record in the hands of Trébol since 2010.
The distance these colts and fillies have to cover has varied over the years. 2,500, 2,400, 2,200 and, from the year 2009 (when Silver Mixó won) onwards 2,150 metres.
The riders whose names have been written in gold after their participation in this great classic are: Julià Arnau, Guillem Coll, Biel Pou, and Antoni Frontera who have achieved five victories each, alongside Tomeu Estelrich and Uli Schnieder, who have achieved four.
